WebbHindman Settlement School was the first rural social settlement school established in America, and we are currently the most successful. Established in 1902 by May Stone and Katherine Pettit in Hindman, Kentucky, our school soon became a model center for education, healthcare, and social services. WebbHindman Settlement School traces its origins to education – recreation programs conducted in Knott and Perry counties, Kentucky by Katherine Pettit and May Stone during the summers of 1899-1901. They were funded by the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs and were aided by a group of women from urban areas.
