WebOptiFine is used by a very large portion of the community for performance and/or shaders. It does introduce bugs every now and then though. I've heard some people use BetterFPS. Some people (myself included) use Dynmap on the server for a shared map. Other than that, GTNH is a really solid pack that IMHO does not need more mods to be enjoyable.
